Ceci n'est pas une martini.

A French friend once told me a martini could only be called so if it consists of vodka or gin, and vermouth. Anything more than that, she said, is not a martini. As Margritte pointed out in the late 1920's, we would be lying if we called something that may not be, fact. This is a collection of my very own original creations.
Call them what you like.

Frog Ball Martini

Vodka
Pickled brussels sprouts
(recipe here)
Olive juice

Mix ice cold vodka, 2 tbs of brussels sprout liquid, and 1 tbs olive juice in chilled shaker. Shake. Sit back, relax, love life.

I once heard pickled brussels sprouts referred to as “frog balls.” These pickled wonders make a great snack, but when the liquid is mixed in a martini it creates a salty, sweet, savory experience that is unlike any martini I have ever sipped. The liquid is peppery, tangy, aromatic and a perfectly seasoned match to the smooth vodka. Martinis for me are all about contrast and surprise without masking the vodka. Think of it as an appetizer at a fine restaurant that also lowers your inhibitions.
