Ceci n'est pas une martini.

A French friend once told me a martini could only be called so if it consists of vodka or gin, and vermouth. Anything more than that, she said, is not a martini. As Margritte pointed out in the late 1920's, we would be lying if we called something that may not be, fact. This is a collection of my very own original creations.
Call them what you like.

Dirty Water Martini

Vodka

Black olives (canned)

Select a quality brand of olives. I would go with a European import or Californian brand. Ensure the can you use has enough liquid for the amount of martinis you intend to make.

Drain and reserve the liquid. Mix ice cold vodka in shaker loaded with ice.

This is one of my favorites. The black olive brine is subtle and smooth but still has the olive zip that works so well with vodka. A play on the Dirty Martini, the Dirty Water Martini is a homage to my favorite city. The dry bite of the vodka and the soft smooth savoriness of the brine blend seamlessly. As the song states, I’ll never see the Charles the same way again. Love that dirty water, Boston, you’re my home.
